Mnarani
is an old coastal village overlooking the natural harbour of Kilifi Creek.
For hundreds of years it was a trading point for Arab Dhows which sailed
with the monsoon winds from the Persian Gulf to trade along the East
African coast.
The name of the village is derived from the Arab word for the tower, on
the hill above the village, a landmark for the trading dhows since the
15th-Century. |

ruins, comprising a large Friday mosque, a smaller mosque and a group of
tombs dating from the 15th-century. The site is well known for the quality
and quantity of the inscriptions and carvings which decorate the mosques
and tombs. |
